"Anti-fingerprint" sounds like marketing speak. Does it actually work? And more importantly — how long does it last?
These are the two questions every skeptical project manager asks. Fair enough. Let's skip the sales pitch and go straight to the testing data.
What AFP Actually Does (And Doesn't Do)
Let's set realistic expectations first:
AFP does: Reduce fingerprint visibility by 85–95%, make cleaning dramatically easier, add scratch resistance, and protect the underlying PVD color layer from sweat/oil degradation.
AFP does not: Make the surface completely immune to all marks. Heavy grease, paint, or adhesive residues will still require cleaning. And in extreme industrial environments, even AFP coatings have finite lifespans.
Think of AFP like a high-quality ceramic coating on a car — it doesn't make the car self-cleaning, but it makes maintenance vastly easier and protects the paint beneath.
The Five Tests That Prove AFP Performance
Test 1: Contact Angle Measurement
The most fundamental AFP quality indicator. A water droplet is placed on the surface and the angle between the droplet and the surface is measured.

Test 2: Eraser Rub Test (JIS K 5600-5-5)
A standard eraser is rubbed back and forth under controlled pressure (500g load). Measures coating adhesion and integrity.

Test 3: Cross-Hatch Adhesion (ASTM D3359)
A lattice pattern is cut through the coating with a precision blade. Standard tape is applied and pulled off. The percentage of coating removed determines the rating.

Test 4: Salt Spray Corrosion (ASTM B117)
The most important test for any stainless steel product in semi-exposed or humid environments. 5% sodium chloride solution is sprayed continuously at 35°C.

Test 5: Taber Abrasion Resistance
A weighted abrasive wheel rotates on the coating surface. The number of cycles until visible wear appears measures scratch resistance.

The key finding: AFP coating integrity correlates directly with cleaning method. Abrasive cleaners and steel wool degrade AFP. Microfiber cloths and mild detergent preserve it indefinitely.
How to Maintain AFP Performance
- Clean with microfiber cloth
- Use pH-neutral detergent
- Wipe in the direction of the grain
- No wax or polish

Why AFP Testing Matters for Your Project
When a supplier says "anti-fingerprint," ask for data. Specifically:
- Contact angle measurement results
- ASTM D3359 adhesion rating (must be 5B)
- Salt spray test duration (minimum 500 hours for 304)
- Taber abrasion cycle count
If they can't provide these, their "AFP" may be nothing more than a thin clear coat that fails within months.
